Manaslu circuit trek is an adventurous and unforgettable 15-day journey in Nepal. This trek takes you to the remotest part of the western Himalayan range, Manaslu region. You will be trekking amidst towering mountains, verdant valleys, and rocky gorges. The trail is dotted with beautiful villages, rivers, and stupas.

Starting from Machha Khola, the trail gradually ascends along the Budi Gandaki River to Larkya La (5,160 m/16,929 ft), a high mountain pass. You will cross numerous suspension and wooden bridges along the way and come across lovely waterfalls and stunning glaciers. Traversing through lush forests of rhododendrons, pine, and bamboo, the trail ascends to ridges and passes by landslide-prone areas. While trekking, you will spend nights in Tibetan refugee villages, too.

The Manaslu circuit trek route is considered offbeat and, therefore only recommended for trekking with previous high-altitude experience and strong fitness. This trek is one of the great alternatives to the Annapurna circuit trek if you are looking for a less crowded trail. Manaslu Circuit Trek is a tea house trek. The accommodation along the trekking route is simple yet quite comfortable, given the remoteness of the region.

The locals are friendly and welcoming. Many of them follow Tibetan Buddhism and are descendants of Tibetans. The lifestyle of the locals and their beliefs & culture will provide you with a very refreshing perspective on life. While trekking, you will also come across many stupas, mani walls, and monasteries.

You will get to witness mesmerizing landscapes and diverse mountain panorama of Manaslu (8,163 m/26,781 ft), Shringi Himal (7,155 m/23,474 ft), Annapurna II (7,937 m/26,040 ft), Nagadi Chuli (7,871 m/25,823 ft), Himlung Himal (7126 m/23,379 ft), Mt. Kang Guru (6,981 m/22,903 ft), and many others.

We have two acclimatization days in our Manaslu circuit trek itinerary. These rest days will help you avoid altitude sickness and explore nearby areas.

While in Samagaon, we have two hiking options- either hike to Pung Gyen Gompa (4,800 m/15,748 ft) along Pungen Glacier or Manaslu base camp (4,800 m/15,748 ft) via Birendra Lake (3,691 m/12,110 ft). During the hike, you may also get to see Himalayan Tahrs and yaks.

*Note: You can extend the Manaslu circuit trek to the Annapurna Circuit if you wish by adding 6 extra days to your itinerary.

Itinerary

We will pick you up from the international airport on your arrival day and drop you at the hotel. You can rest and explore for a few hours. In the late evening, meet us for a welcome dinner. You will meet with your mountain guide during the dinner. We will have a short trek briefing and pack our duffel bags.

Today, we will begin our Manaslu circuit trek journey. Early in the morning, we will leave Kathmandu and drive to Machha Khola via Arughat. The drive is long but very beautiful. The road is nice up to Arughat, and from here onwards, the ride gets bumpy. You will see impressive views of lush green hills, rivers, towns, terraced fields, waterfalls, and snow-capped mountains on the way.

Leaving Machha Khola, we will trek on a zigzag road across the Budhi Gandaki river bank. Trekking through dense forests, we will trek past Khorlabeshi and continue to Tatopani. Here, we can take a short break and enjoy natural hot springs. Further, we will cross a suspension bridge over the Budhi Gandaki River and reach Doban. From here, we will trek past a landslide area to Yaruphant and cross a wooden bridge before ascending to Jagat.

From Jagat, we will trek through dense sub-tropical forests. On the way, we will pass by small rivers and beautiful villages. The trail follows a rocky ridge to Salleri and descends to Sirdibas. The valley opens to Ghatta Khola and soon crosses a long suspension bridge to Philim. We will then trek past Ekle Bhatti and steeply descend on grassy slopes. Crossing the west and east bank of the Budhi Gandaki River, we will trek via bamboo forests to reach Deng.

The trail follows a steep route to a small village called Rana. From here, we ascend through pine forests and reach Bihi Phedi. The view of Kutang Himal is fantastic from here. Trekking past mani stones, we will cross two bridges over the Buri Gandaki River. The trail ascends and descends through rocky gorges to Prok village.

We will spend one more night in Prok Village to acclimatize. In the morning, we will hike to Kal Tal Lake, from where we get to enjoy breathing mountain views. The peaceful surroundings of the lake will allow us to unwind. After the hike, we will return to the village and spend time with the locals, observing their daily lifestyle and culture.

The trail from Prok to Namrung is uneven and rugged. We will trek on steep paths and landslide debris in some places. Likewise, the mountain views are fantastic on this day. The trail goes past small settlements and stupas on the way.

Leaving Namrung, we will walk on an uneven trail. As we get close to Lho, we can see the path is lined with a long mani stone wall. Along the way, we can see stunning views of Peak 29 and Pungen Glacier. Likewise, we can also see Mt. Manaslu while trekking.

From Lho, the trail descends to a new monastery and an ancient chorten. We will then follow an uphill trail to Shayla village, a Tibetan settlement, enjoying a lovely mountain panorama. Trekking through the rugged alpine trail, we will reach Samagaon. This settlement is believed to be 500 years old. Here, we will visit an old fortress called Dzongka Dzong.

We will spend another day in Samagaon acclimatizing and hiking around. After an early morning breakfast, we will visit the Pung Gyen Gompa (4,800 m/15,748 ft), located east of the Nubri valley. During the hike, we can see views of numerous Himalayan mountains and may spot animals like Himalayan tahrs and yaks.

We also have an alternative hike to Manaslu base camp, north of Samagaon. On the way to the base camp, we will also come across the beautiful Birendra Tal and jaw-dropping mountain landscapes. Both hikes are fantastic.

The trail continues to Samdo on this day. The scenery dramatically changes to fewer trees but vast pastures, mani walls, and barren hills. We will cross a wooden bridge over the Buri Gandaki River and reach White Kani. From here, we will trek to Samdo and spend the remaining day resting and exploring around the village.

From Samdo, the trail ascends to Larke Bazaar. It is a seasonal Tibetan market where we can see the merchants selling many antiques and crafts. The trail from here descends to the Budi Gandaki River and crosses it over a wooden bridge. Further, we will gradually ascend, crossing two streams, enjoying a beautiful view of the Larkya glacier. The trail enters Salka Khola Valley and ascends to Dharamsala, also known as Larke Phedi.

On this day, we will be crossing the Larkya La pass, so we will wake up early in the morning and begin trekking. Following a steep route, we will come out of the valley and cross several ridges to reach Larkya La Pass. Enjoying stunning views of Larkya Glacier, Cho Danda, and Larkya Peak, we will ascend toward the top of the pass.

From the top, the view of Himlung Himal, Annapunra II, and Mt. Manaslu is phenomenal. The trail further descends from the pass to Bimtang. We will trek through pastures and fields, crossing numerous streams.

Today is our last day of trekking. Enjoying panoramic views of Mt. Manaslu, Lamjung Himal, and Himlung Himal, we will descend. The trail crosses a high pasture and bridge over the Dudh Khola. We will then trek through rhododendron forests and pass by a narrow valley to Karche. Further, the trail continues via fields and a steep ride and descends to Gho. From here, we trek past Tilike and further descend to Dharapani.

After a delicious breakfast, we will drive to Besisahar from Dharapani. The road follows an uneven cliffside, offering views of lush green hills, rivers, and villagers. From Besisahr, the road is bumpy for a couple of hours till Dumre. From here, we will enjoy a comfortable and scenic ride to Kathmandu.

Upon reaching Kathmandu, we will drop you at the hotel. You have the remaining day free. Take a rest and unpack. Explore the bustling streets of Thamel and the window shop. We will meet you in the late evening for a farewell dinner, which marks the end of our journey together in Nepal.
